Children's Walk Guides
Connect Children with Nature
Every school year, our Children's Walk Guides introduce young children to the wonders of the natural world, often for the
first time. Experience the Botanical Garden through a child's eyes and connect them with the environment through
an exploration of the plants, animals and insects that flourish here. Our Children's Walk Guides serve nearly 6,000
schoolchildren grades K-5 every year.
Being a docent for the Children’s Walk program at the SFBG is a wonderful experience. What an inspiring location to help children learn about ‘the web of life’ and how we are all connected: plants, animals and people!! It brings great joy, excitement and new knowledge to all.” Karen A.
“I’ve been a guide at SFBG for over 13 yrs. and still really look forward to every walk. I never tire of watching the children’s excitement grow over their discoveries of: how some leaves smell, how bird songs differ, walking amongst the giant bamboo, hugging the awesome redwoods…” Cynthia F.
Children’s Walk Guide Training
Learn basic ecology and botany along with techniques for engaging children outdoors through an exciting mix of hands-on classroom time, walk observation, and practice. No previous horticultural or teaching experience is required, but we do hope you enjoy spending time with children! Trainings are offered twice a year, starting in February and September.
