Joseph Z. Yan began carving jade in China in 1972 at the age of 16, then afterwards added other art forms. After he moved to the United States, he began to use traditional Chinese landscape-painting techniques to portray American natural landscapes. His recent works combine traditional Chinese brushwork with contemporary Western concepts.
