Garden Orientations for Teachers
Have you thought about leading your students on a visit to the
San Francisco Botanical Garden in Golden Gate Park, but just don't know
where to start? Call us to arrange a garden orientation for you
and your colleagues, to help you make the most of your visits! These free
programs can be scheduled after school, a minimum of 7 teachers is required.
Summer
Teacher Workshops
Discover new resources for teaching as you learn more about the natural world in a week-long summer workshop co-sponsored by the SFBG Society, California Academy of Sciences, and the Conservatory of Flowers.

Guided School Walks
Free docent-guided walks are offered for elementary school students throughout
the school year. Dates are assigned through two lotteries- one in mid-September
and one in mid-December. Sign-up for Teacher Updates to receive advance notice of school walk lotteries.
If you have been scheduled for a Guided Walk at the SF Botanical Garden, please see Preparing for your Guided Walk to obtain material to help you prepare your class for your walk.

Guided school walks and our Children's Walk Docent Training are funded in part by Save the Redwoods League.
Children's Garden School
Program

Hands-on
programs are offered in our Children's Garden for elementary and middle
school groups on a limited basis. Programs require active teacher and
parent participation.

Summer Programs
"From Acorn to Oak" Summer Program for Groups
Summer camp and daycare groups can
sign up to participate in a one-day garden program based in our Children's
Garden. Designed for K-5 students, this program runs from mid-June through
mid-August, weekdays from 10 to 2 pm. Maximum group size is 45 children.

"Garden Explorers" Summer Program for Groups
Children explore the Botanical Garden in small groups with a guide, observing, collecting and sketching. Following the hike, children create a special project to take home, based on their experiences in the garden. This program is designed for groups wishing a shorter program - a two hour program with flexible scheduling, Weds/Thurs/Fri in July and August. Twelve to thirty children can be accommodated on one day.
Library Collection
The
children's collection at the Helen
Crocker Russell Library of Horticulture includes over 1,
000 volumes for children of various ages, and includes books in many languages.
Books do not circulate, but children, parents and school groups are welcome
to enjoy the books in the library. Click here for information on Sunday

Volunteer Opportunities
Children's Docent Training
Share nature with children: Enjoy spending time with children and being
outdoors? Want to learn more about botany and ecology? If so, find
out more about how to become a children's docent at San Francisco
Botanical Garden. This three month program will introduce you to techniques
for working with elementary school children in the botanical gardens.
Learn about other volunteer
opportunities like becoming a docent, a Children's Garden volunteer, or
a special events volunteer.
