Shed Warming in the Children's Garden

October 31, 2012 was a day to remember – Halloween, the San Francisco Giants victory parade, and most important of all, the shed warming in the Children's Garden!

Shed warming celebration at the Botanical Garden.

Shed warming in the Children's Garden. Inset left to right: Who was that red-legged frog?; Honored guest Gordon Wilson; Peter Good and Josh of Goodscapes.

SFBGS staff, city gardeners, docents, nursery volunteers, and other friends of the Children's Garden came out on a cloudy morning to celebrate the construction of a wonderful shed to support children's programs in the garden. Special honored guests were Gordon and Alida Wilson, the donors who made the most of a matching gift program with Chevron in order to underwrite the construction, and Peter Good and crew of Goodscapes, the contractors who built the shed with thoughtful care and lots of recycled components. All enjoyed seasonal snacks, bagpipe music, some great costumes and good company in the garden.

Both the Children's Garden itself and the programs associated with it have expanded in recent years, and new family programs which will start up in the new year will make the garden an even livelier place. The new shed will be more than just a storage space, serving as an activity center and educational resource once the exterior walls have been painted with murals and set up with informational signage and white boards. Young people will be helping us decorate the shed, and we'll celebrate with them when that next phase is complete – another party not to be missed!
