One hundred forty years ago, three signature tree species were planted to create the tree canopy in Golden Gate Park, among them, the Monterey pine. Although a hybrid version thrives across the globe, the original species faces serious threat in its native range due to pitch canker disease. Three wild stands exist in California. Find out more in this month's In Bloom feature, along with photos, a plant profile and exact locations. |
