February 11th Plant Sale at the Arbor

February is the beginning of gardening season here in the Bay Area. The coldest days of winter are over (in mid-January, we had three nights in a row of 29° or below at the Nursery), and deciduous perennials are beginning to push new growth. As days start to lengthen, it is a great time to plant in the sunnier parts of the garden, especially if we get a little more rain.

To help you along your way, we'll stock The Arbor and augment the space with numerous tables for the Saturday, February 11th Plant Sale. Included in this selection will be a number of interesting culinary delights. We will have Yacón (Polymnia sonchifolia), a perennial South American root vegetable in the sunflower family. It produced many edible tubers in our five gallon stock pots last year. We will also have Oco (Oxalis tuberosa) another root vegetable with delicious small potato-like storage roots that can be eaten raw or cooked. Look for alpine strawberries and unusual lettuces, beets and chards, all of which grow in cool San Francisco. As spring progresses, we hope to bring you more unusual food plants that will actually produce in our foggy climate!

Choose from a wide selection to begin your spring planting. We'll have our knowledgeable staff on hand to answer your questions. See you at the plant sale!
