Gondwana Circle Design Competition

FAQs

Is it okay to suggest plantings, signage or other improvements outside the 30' Gondwana Circle?
Designs should concentrate on the 30' circle of soil, but suggestions can be made for signage, plantings, and other improvements to the edges of the gardens bordering Gondwana Circle (Chile, South America, Australia, and New Zealand). The paving surrounding the Circle is new and as such, any suggestions for new work in the paving should not require the removal of the paving.

Can a design have a base within the 30' Circle but project outward after a certain height over the surrounding paving?
Yes, but it needs to meet City codes for safety and must be within the project budget.

Do there have to be plants in the design?
Designs can be all plants, no plants, all hardscape, or a combination, as long as the Competition Objectives (and budget) are met.

How does the winning competition team participate in the construction?
Subject to obtaining all necessary approvals and funding, it is the Society's intent to engage the winning team to provide the requisite professional services to implement their design. Construction of the winning design will be by a contractor.

Are there limits on height, depth, or materials?
None other than public safety, building codes, and budget.

Who will maintain the site after it is built?
City gardeners and maintenance staff.

How many entries per registration?
Only one entry per registration. Each additional entry requires an additional registration. If the additional registrations create a hardship, please request a hardship reduction.

The competition kit asks for a conceptual budget. What categories should be included in that budget?
Provide a conceptual cost estimate that includes the following categories:

Team Name & Registration No.
Please provide a brief narrative description of the materials and methods to be used in the construction of your design.

Please provide conceptual cost estimates for the construction/installation of the following (only where applicable):

Do you see the project as Landmark with kind of “relaxing points” only, or, instead, including services like toilets, small bar/restaurants etc?
Services (e.g. toilets, snack bar, etc.) should not be included
