2009 Green Champion: San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom

Gavin NewsomThe San Francisco Botanical Garden Society’s chosen recipient of its third annual Green Champion Award is Gavin Newsom, Mayor of San Francisco. His leadership and pioneering initiatives have made San Francisco one of the greenest cities in the United States.

A Message from the Mayor
I am honored to receive the San Francisco Botanical Garden Green Champion Award of 2009. It is a great honor to be recognized by such a beloved San Francisco institution that is dedicated to the education and conservation of our natural beauty and resources.

I am proud of our city as it emerges as a leader in green technology and sustainability. San Francisco is becoming the solar capital of America by helping residents and businesses fund and install solar panels and creating a sustainable infrastructure through our Green Building Ordinance. We are also motivating our citizens to reduce their carbon footprint by providing a cleaner and greener Muni and creating innovative legislation like the Mandatory Composting Act, so we can make composting as easy and ubiquitous as recycling.

The San Francisco Botanical Garden has always been committed to offering resources for the public to gain knowledge on sustainable gardening practices, collaborating with local and national environmental organizations and providing a look at the natural magnificence we strive to preserve. Together, we will continue to create a greener future for all San Franciscans to enjoy. Thank you again for this generous award.

Sincerely,

Gavin Newsom
