Families with children of all ages can enjoy nature crafts, garden care, outdoor games and exploration in the Children's Garden - a whole variety of activities to do at your own pace with help from garden staff and teen interns. Water thirsty plants, create a crazy critter, dig in our dune sand pit, or share a book in our Living Room. Bring your lunch and enjoy a picnic in the garden. Free to all garden visitors! 1pm-4pm, Saturdays, April-October FREE with regular admission

Story Time and Family Walk

Looking for a fun, free and easy-to-coordinate activity? Join lively readers in our cozy children's book nook to hear engaging stories from the Library's extraordinary collection. Afterward, families are invited to take a special docent-led children's tour of the Garden. Why not bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the beautiful surroundings? Story Time takes place the first and third Sunday of every month at 10:30am, year-round, and lasts approximately 30 minutes; the tour leaves the Library at 11am. Library admission FREE, Garden activities FREE with regular admission. More about Story Time.

Summer Reading Club

Exercise your mind and your body this summer with the Summer Reading Club at the Botanical Garden Library! This free reading club introduces children to new nature-related reading themes and garden activities each week. Kids receive seeds to plant as they meet their weekly reading goals, and receive a special prize for completing the entire eight-week program. Prevent the "summer slide" and get outside - join the Club! Drop in during the Library's open hours, 10am-4pm (six days a week; closed Tuesdays), June 1-July 31 Library admission FREE, Garden activities FREE with regular admission

Self-Guided

Families are encouraged to visit and explore San Francisco Botanical Garden together. Older children will enjoy adventuring off-road through the vine-draped paths of the Mesoamerican cloud forest or climbing up Heidelberg Hill through the Mediterranean Garden. Families with younger children can follow well-paved paths to the Garden of Fragrance and around the Ancient Plant Garden - keep an eye out for the dinosaur! Be sure to check out the children's collection at the Helen Crocker Russell Library of Horticulture. Check here for more information to help plan your visit.
