Dr. Luu Dam Cu (center), Head of Ethnobotany
Department, and his staff. They are a young department, founded
in 2000. Their projects involve conservation of traditional knowledge
of the hill tribes, especially knowledge dealing with healing and
medicine. A lengthy discussion with them results in the idea to
hold a short course or seminar on ethnobotany in Hanoi, taught by
foreign experts and facilitated by the Ethnobotanical
Conservation Organization for Southeast Asia and San Francisco Botanical Garden.
Dr. Cu's staff have a background primarily in botany, and are keen to receive such training in ethnobotany (the study of
how cultures use plants).
