In the dim shade of the forest, I suddenly
spy bright gleams of red and yellow against the forest floor.
These turn out to be freshly fallen maple leaves in autumn color.
How can this be happening in February? Apparently, some temperate
deciduous trees hold their leaves throughout the mild winter
and drop them just before the spring flush of new leaves.
