As we leave the mountains, we pass roadside shops selling orchids that have been illegally taken from the forests. Most of these species are already common in cultivation, and easily mass-propagated, so there is no need to deplete wild populations. Nevertheless, local people need to make a living, and when no other means are available, their main resource is the forest. However, this kind of harvest is often non-sustainable.
