Lotus flower

Seed pod from the Wol tree

Flores - Mt. Ranaka
30
These are some of the other plants we encountered in the low to mid-elevations on Flores. The lotus is sacred to Buddhist and Hindu cultures. An immature seed pod is shown to the right of the flower. Seeds from mature pods are edible. The wol tree (Sterculiaceae) is commonly cultivated for the edible flesh that surrounds each seed.
