Position Overview

San Francisco Botanical Garden Society (SFBGS), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is seeking an energetic, highly motivated and service-oriented individual with strong interpersonal skills to support sales and promotion of its membership program.

About San Francisco Botanical Garden Society

San Francisco Botanical Garden Society (SFBGS) works in partnership with the City of San Francisco/Recreation and Park Department to support San Francisco Botanical Garden, whose 55 acres in Golden Gate Park and geographic and thematic gardens include more than 8,000 different kinds of plants native to California and from throughout the world.

SFBGS's twofold mission is to build communities of support for the Botanical Garden and to cultivate the bond between people and plants. With the help of its members, donors and volunteers, SFBGS funds and oversees Garden improvements, provides curatorial and plant collections management services, propagates plants for the Botanical Garden and for sale to the public, maintains the Helen Crocker Russell Library of Horticulture, offers year-round educational and community programming, operates the Garden Bookstore and Arbor (for plant sales), and welcomes visitors from San Francisco, the Bay Area and all over the world.

Job Description

San Francisco Botanical Garden is seeking one outgoing part-time employee to sell membership at the Garden. Candidates with a background in sales, promotions and/or marketing are preferred. Those with knowledge and passion about the Garden are encouraged to apply.

This part-time position requires working on Saturdays and Sundays, weather permitting, and occasional weekday hours in the office. The position assumes a maximum of 12 hours weekly though hourly requirement may vary per week. Additional hours, days and evenings may be needed during critical periods and special events.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Actively promote best value membership options to visitors by communicating in a friendly, efficient and effective manner
  • Handle membership inquiries from visitors, answering questions and explaining benefits
  • Accurately complete paperwork to process new and renewal membership sales
  • Provide superior service to visitors, including maintaining general knowledge of Garden attractions and amenities, finding ways to create a positive and educational visitor experience
  • Facilitate entry for visitors waiting to enter the Garden
  • Setup and breakdown on-site sales locations
  • Stand or sit at assigned post(s) for long periods of time. May be required to walk long distances to other locations throughout the Garden
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of assigned work areas
  • Assist the team in carrying out any additional operational duties at the Garden gates
  • Occasionally help with membership administrative work in the office


  • Minimum age of 16 years or older
  • Customer service oriented
  • Basic verbal, written, computer, mathematical, and communication skills
  • Must be comfortable with handling cash and equivalents, previous cash handling experience preferred
  • Proactive and outgoing
  • Ability to frequently move objects weighing up to 25 pounds such as but not limited to boxes, tables, chairs and signs
  • Dependability and reliability
  • Ability to stay outdoors for long periods of time in a variety of weather conditions
