Summer Interns for "From Acorn to Oak" Children's Program

Intern Job Description

Interns’ primary responsibility is to plan, prepare and conduct our “From Acorn to Oak” summer program. This program serves children enrolled in day camps and similar programs, providing them an opportunity to spend a day working, playing, and learning outdoors.  “From Acorn to Oak” is centered around our Children’s Garden, where children can plant, pick and eat a variety of garden crops. Children can also explore other garden areas, including the John Muir Nature Trail, our redwood grove, and the succulent garden. Three interns work with and supervise three high school students.


Responsibilities:

  1. Develop, prepare and present hands-on gardening, environmental education, and nature craft activities for children ages 5 – 12.
  2. Maintain Children’s Garden - water, weed, plant, etc.
  3. Train and supervise high school interns, working with two other senior interns.
  4. Maintain program records.
  5. Assist with other children’s programs as necessary

Qualifications:

  1.  Undergraduate degree in progress or recent BA in relevant field
  2. Ability to work with a diverse urban population.
  3. Previous experience working with children ages 5 – 12 in an outdoor setting.
  4. Experience working as part of a group.
  5. Gardening experience or other outdoor experience.

Work Schedule

June 12 - August 15, 2008
Monday - Friday, 9 am to 4 pm


Salary

$14/ hr., $490/week
